last dregs of the Florida kitchen
What causes nutritionally responsible people to eat Wendy’s fast food two nights in a row?
1. Moving
2. Inadvertently injuring your back so badly that you really can’t move
Yeah….both.
I’m in a lot of pain. Can’t bend at my waist any further than about 20 degrees max. Can’t move laterally. Can’t twist my torso. Can’t really get up from...

international/faraway readers!
Google Analytics is my new favorite toy. It’s easy and SO FUN to play with.
Mine tells me that I have readers from all over the place! YAY!
I have visitors from Australia, Germany, Spain, Chile, and about half of the US states. Pretty awesome.
Thanks so much for reading! And please don’t be shy…leave me a comment and say hello. Is Disqus annoying? I wish Tumblr allowed...

I'm going home.
Home = Philadelphia
It was a good attempt, but Florida is not where we’re going to put down our roots. I’m hopping into the car with the cats on Monday and driving back to Philly, to stay.
It sucks to be so far away from Ben’s family (you saw my post the other day about the little ones, right?), but that’s what Southwest Air is for (can we please have a moment of...

I'm appalled.
Thanks to Jen at Blag Hag for bringing this ridiculous story with incredibly scary implications to her readership’s attention.
I’d also like to say that I really hate giving Christine O’Donnell any more air time than she’s already getting. This is too ridiculous for me not to comment on.
The gist of the story is this: Her campaign says that she is advocating for a...

I'm an aunt.
When Ben and I got engaged, I suddenly became an aunt. I have three nieces and one nephew. I love all four of them to freaking bits.
I’m new to this aunt thing, so I am not sure if I’m totally biased or not…..but I think all four of them are the cutest stinkin’ kids. Let’s pick on the lone boy for a minute.
We’ll call him J.
He smiles on command....

chocolate stout cake
Design*Sponge posts a great weekly column called In the Kitchen With…. Love it. I made the Chocolate Guinness Cake a couple days ago for a friend’s birthday. The recipe is a tad unorthodox but genius.
My frosting doesn’t look as nice as Katie’s. I think it’s because my cake was still a tiny bit warm and my frosting also probably could have been chilled in the...

Mod-looking houses
I really dig the mod houses. I am guessing that they have been built anytime between the late forties and 1965 at the absolute latest. Anyone else out there have any observations or knowledge to share? Please comment, if so.
Dontcha just love that live oak canopy with all the moss?:

Hi Philly,
Haven’t talked to you in a while. Thought I’d drop a line.
How are those potholes doing? Especially the ones in the Spruce Street bike lane…still f*cking up everyone’s tyres and alignment? Yeah, I thought so.
How are all your angry commuters, on foot, on bicycle, and in the cars? Still cranky? Still gunning for each other? Still unreasonably irritable? Yeah, I...

trip to Rock Springs
Ben and I visited Rock Springs today. It’s one of my favorite places in Florida thus far.
Says Ben of the aquifer-fed springs system: ”If you had scuba gear, an unlimited supply of oxygen, and were as skinny as a broomstick, you could probably swim from Apopka to Tallahassee.” Fair enough.
No ‘gator spotting this trip, in case anyone was wondering.
The...

a word about two very good people
My friends Bob and Tiffany are celebrating their two-year anniversary. They both also celebrated their birthdays this past week. It’s important that I say a couple words here about them.
Isn’t Tiff gorgeous, by the way? This picture was taken at Chris and Dena’s wedding in September 2008, just after Tiff escaped from Abington Hospital.
Tiff has been in remission for just...

**update**
I had three responses and one correction (ha!) so I think that all four of you should win something fun in the real mail. I’m not sure who two of you are, so I’m hoping you’ll check back.

2009 Philadelphia Phlower Show
I know, I’m a little behind on the times.
I just rediscovered the Flickr set of the pictures I took (with a kindly loaned DSLR) and I thought you might enjoy seeing them.

today is "Coming Out Day"
This subject makes me very cranky. It’s ridiculous there needs to be a special designation for such a day at all. I could provide links upon links to back myself up, but instead, I’m just going to say what’s on my mind and keep this short and not sweet.
To all bigoted, closed-minded, scientific-evidence-denying, homophobic people: stop it.
Stop harassing, haranguing,...

Mediterranean-ish homes
There are quite a few homes around Lake Ivanhoe that have more of a Tex-Mex look to them. The roots are the same, but I went for some semblance of uniformity (kind of) in this series. I don’t have much to say because I don’t know much about this style. Anyone out there have anything to add or inform? Comments are open.
cheers,
Miss Minty

just a little sadness
I flew to Austin, Texas last week. Nice city, great eats, tasty beer. It is actually a potential honeymoon destination…more discussion is needed. Anyway.
We of course spent most of the two hours and twenty-five minutes over the Gulf. My face was glued to the window because I was looking for something I didn’t want to find. I felt a pit in my stomach when I saw it. Can you see...

commentary on my state of mind: missing...
I think this will be wordy. I’m reflecting upon the past two months. It’s been rough. That’s an understatement.
Since the beginning of August, I have quit a steady job, Ben went away to work on a cruise ship, and I moved 1,000 miles to an unfamiliar city with virtually no savings and, wait for it…no real mental or emotional preparation for the incredible loneliness...

Craftsman style bungalows in Orlando
Here we go!
I don’t know all that much about the Craftsman/Arts & Crafts style, and rather than just directing you to Wikipedia for a little overview, you can head there if you’re curious. I might see if the Orlando Public Library has anything interesting I can share.
All the homes pictured here are in my neighborhood (College Park) or somewhere between here and the library (I...

The house tour
I lied about the residential architecture tour; that’s going to have to wait until next week. Instead, I’m going to show you our little apartment in Orlando. Hope everyone enjoys! I’ll attempt to curb my newly-acquired Victorian verboseness (I just read Pride and Prejudice for the first time this week and I can already tell it somewhat affected my verbal and written...
